I use 2,5mm Neoprene fuel line (tube) as alternative for LEGO Pneumatic hose / tubing (part no: x188). The external diameter is 4,5mm and the internal diameter 2,5. The thickness of the wall is 1mm.

This hose is relative cheap and it fit very well. I bought this hose in a Vasco shop in Utrecht, the Netherlands, but it is possible to order it online at Graupner in Germany. The original technic pneumatic tubing can be found at bricklink (part no: 5102).
update june 2009: I bought 10 meter high quality silicone pneumatic hose at Blokbricks.com. It is quite cheap. Frans Snijders Blok, owner of the shop, told me that he let the hose manufacture specially for him. It is slightly smoother than Lego hose, but it does not quickly peel off the nozell when it is bend. And the hose is resistant to the same pressure. I used it in my LEGO Pneumatic Engine (LPE) 3 cylinder inline and I am fully satisfied!
